Competence (organization skills) analysis

Competence analysis provides executive leadership with a quantitative overview of the current skills in the organization, and skills required to compete and grow. It provides input to training decisions as well as identifying those skills which should be sought in new employees. You can outsource this analysis to us, or we can provide you with a process and tools to perform an analysis of your organizations core competencies and skills needed to succeed. These tools can help you inventory what skills you currently have on board and which need to be developed or acquired. We use standard skills references such as the For Your Improvement series by LOMINGER.COM.

Challenge: Employee performance appraisals were inconsistent and often based on how articulate the employee's first line manager was. Moreover all organizations over a certain size were required to fit a rating curve with consequences. This led to tremendous management dissatisfaction. A more quantitative and fair system was needed to identify key talent and grow in areas needed to be successful.

Action: Using Lominger tools for the soft skills, and first line manager input for the technical and knowledge skills, profiles were created for different job categories and levels within those categories. Each specific skill was described using actionable criteria. A database was built with a graphical front end and appropriate security. First line managers filled out the database as they did their performance reviews; the reporting features were used by directors and higher managers to look for inconsistencies and take action to resolve them.

Response: Simply developing the system provided great benefit. Through the process we identified the skills that were most important and how to identify them. This enabled healthier discussions at the first line manager level that led to great consistency. The database enabled us to advocate for training budget items in a quantitative way.
